Belonging to a Tradition

“Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love.”

There is a belonging that comes from being part of something larger than yourself — a tradition, a lineage, a way of understanding the world that has been passed down through generations.

This kind of belonging does not require you to agree with everything in the tradition. It requires only that you feel yourself to be part of a conversation that began before you and will continue after you.

The person who belongs to a tradition — whether it is a religious tradition, a cultural tradition, an intellectual tradition, or an artistic tradition — has access to a kind of rootedness that is hard to find elsewhere. They know where they come from. They know what they are part of.

This rootedness is not a constraint. It is a foundation. And foundations make it possible to build.
