Seek not the acceptance of others, for when you belong to yourself, the world becomes your home.

The deepest belonging is not belonging to a group, a community, or a person. It is belonging to yourself.

When you do not belong to yourself — when you have abandoned your own values, your own perceptions, your own needs in order to fit in — then belonging to others becomes a kind of homelessness. You are present but not there. You are accepted but not known.

The path to genuine belonging with others runs through belonging to yourself first. When you know who you are, when you trust your own perceptions, when you have made peace with your own nature, then you can be truly present with others.

And true presence is the only foundation for true belonging.
