There is a longing within you, a remembrance of a love you have never met, yet feel in every breath.

There is a word in Portuguese — saudade — for a longing for something you may never have had, or may never have again. A bittersweet ache for something absent.

Many people carry a version of this: a homesickness for a belonging they have never quite found. A sense that somewhere, there is a place where they would be fully understood, fully accepted, fully at home. And the ache of not having found it yet.

This longing is not a pathology. It is a compass. It is pointing toward something real — a quality of connection, a depth of understanding, a sense of being truly known — that is genuinely possible, even if it has not yet been found.

The longing is the evidence that you know what you are looking for. That is more than most people have.
