The Fear of Being Seen

“Be empty of worrying. Think of who created thought. Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?”

Of all the fears, the fear of being truly seen may be the most universal. We want to be known, and we are terrified of being known. We want to be loved, and we are afraid that if someone saw us completely — all of it, the beautiful and the shameful — they would leave.

So we manage our presentation. We show the parts we believe are lovable and hide the rest. We perform a version of ourselves and hope it is enough.

But the love that comes to the performed version of you is not love for you. It is love for the performance. And somewhere inside, you know the difference.

The risk of being seen is real. But the cost of never being seen is higher.
