“Your heart knows the right path, let the fear of disappointing others melt away like the morning mist.”
The fear of disappointing others is one of the most socially acceptable fears, which is why it is so rarely examined. We call it consideration. We call it being thoughtful. We call it caring about people.
But when the fear of disappointing others becomes the primary driver of your decisions, it is no longer consideration — it is a kind of self-erasure. You are living someone else's life to avoid their disappointment.
The people who love you do not need you to be perfect. They do not need you to always say yes, always be available, always meet their expectations. What they need — if they are capable of real love — is for you to be honest.
Disappointing someone who loves you is survivable. Disappearing yourself to avoid it is not.
