“Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself, freeing your heart from the chains of another's remorse.”
The hardest forgiveness is the forgiveness of someone who is not sorry. Who has not acknowledged the harm. Who may not even know they caused it. Who, if confronted, would deny it or minimize it or turn it back on you.
This forgiveness cannot wait for an apology that may never come. It cannot be conditional on the other person's remorse. It must be done for yourself, without their participation.
This is not fair. The person who caused the harm should be the one doing the work. But fairness is not always available. And waiting for fairness means waiting forever.
Forgiving the unrepentant is not about them. It is about your freedom. It is the decision to stop letting their lack of remorse determine the quality of your inner life.
