Who Are You?

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there.”

The question "who am I?" is not a question with an answer. It is a question that opens.

Every answer you give — I am a parent, a professional, a person who has been hurt, a person who loves this and not that — every answer is true and also incomplete. You are all of these things and also the one who is watching all of these things.

Rumi called this the witness — the part of you that observes your thoughts without being your thoughts, that feels your feelings without being consumed by them. This witness is what you are looking for when you ask who you are.

You are not your history. You are not your roles. You are not your fears or your achievements. You are the awareness that holds all of these — and that awareness is, in Rumi's understanding, connected to something much larger than any single life.
