Loving What You Cannot Keep

Everything you love, you will one day lose. This is not a reason to love less. It is the reason love matters at all.

The temporariness of things is not a flaw in the design. It is the design. A flower is beautiful precisely because it does not last. A moment of connection is precious precisely because it cannot be held.

When you love something knowing you cannot keep it, you are forced into presence. You cannot defer your attention. You cannot save the appreciation for later. Later may not come.

This is what grief teaches us, if we let it: that love and loss are not opposites. They are the same thing, seen from different moments in time.
