What Is Love?

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

Love is the bridge between you and everything.

Love, in Rumi's understanding, is not a feeling that arrives and departs. It is the ground beneath every feeling — the force that moves through longing, through loss, through reunion. To ask what love is, is to ask what you are made of.

The lover does not seek the beloved to complete themselves. They seek the beloved because love itself is seeking — because the soul recognises something in another that it recognises in itself.

Rumi wrote: "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it." This is the most honest thing ever said about love. We do not lack love. We have learned to protect ourselves from it.

What you call longing is love in its purest form — before it has been answered, before it has been named, before it has been disappointed. The ache itself is the gift.
