Silence
“The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.”

“The soul has been given its own ears to hear things the mind does not understand.”
There is a particular quality of silence in nature that is different from the silence of a room. It is not the absence of sound — nature is full of sound. It is the absence of human noise. The absence of the constant hum of technology, of traffic, of other people's urgency.
In this silence, something in the nervous system begins to settle. The vigilance that is required to navigate human environments — the constant reading of social cues, the management of impressions, the awareness of being watched — can temporarily relax.
This is not escapism. It is restoration. The human nervous system evolved in nature, not in cities. The silence of nature is not foreign to us. It is, in some deep sense, home.
