To find your true self, let the false identities wither away, like leaves surrendering to the autumn wind.

Every significant transformation requires the death of an identity. Not the death of the person, but the death of a particular story about who the person is.

The identity of the victim must die before the survivor can emerge. The identity of the person who is not creative must die before the artist can emerge. The identity of the person who is not worthy of love must die before the beloved can emerge.

These deaths are real. They are grieved. The old identity, however limiting, was also familiar. It was safe. It was known. And letting it die requires mourning it, even as you welcome what is coming to replace it.

You cannot become who you are becoming while holding onto who you have been. The new life requires the old one to end.
